Day 45
Monday 31st August
33km, 400m descent
Tony Lancashire
Another day of good progress in positive conditions ticked off some impressive distances. As the afternoon wore on, however, we started to cross the first crevasses, and then a little while later the ominous sight of the fist meltwater channels, a sure sign that we are heading into the more complex terrain that marks the edge of the icecap. We are rapidly approaching the culmination of the adventure but at the same time we are heading into some potentially difficult terrain that demands respect, patience and careful decision making. As a wise German General recently told me, “It’s not over until everyone‘s at home with their families”. I am very conscious of the responsibility I bear to ensure we all make it through the coming days safely.
