Day 46
Tuesday 1st September
35km, 400 descent
Tony Lancashire
Downhill ……apart from all the uphill! The icecap is not as regular as you might think, and we seem to have found every undulation. Topped a rise at 1455 to be gifted with our first sight of the western mountains….‘quite an emotional moment’ as Marcus commented. We’re far from there yet…. but maybe we’re at the beginning of the end.
The mood is buoyant. Over the last 6 days we have covered over 200km with successive 10hr pulls day on day. Most marked is the good humour, banter and Tom’s occasional forays into politics! In reality, some interesting chats on the move with Poul and Tom the key protagonists. In fact, the one constant while skiing is the indistinct sound of Tom’s voice. It’s a bit like Test Match Special - you don’t really need to be listening but it has a comforting timbre.
Camp was incredibly dramatic in the midst of a major crevasse field with an impressive view of the mountains, our target for the new few days. We celebrated the western mountains with the other half of Marcus’ Danish rum with which we’d toasted goodbye to the eastern mountains so long ago. Really good progress but the challenge I suspect is about to be renewed!
